SpaceX has started the year by launching 49 more Starlink internet relay satellites into space. The latest launch continues SpaceX's expansion with it being the 35th dedicated Starlink launch since 2019. This launch brings the total number of Starlink satellites up to almost 2,000.
The launching was the latest step in SpaceX's drive to build out a globe-spanning constellation of laser-connected internet relay stations designed to supply relatively high-speed broadband service to customers anywhere on the planet. The goal is to provide internet and connect people in rural and remote areas who have little to no connectivity.
To date, the service is fully operational and available in 20 countries, and that number keeps rising. With more than 100,000 subscribers, company officials have said that the program is continuously growing.
Starlink is the world's first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and more.
A SpaceX initiative to create a global broadband network, Starlink uses a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide high-speed internet services. SpaceX, more formally known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp., is a privately held rocket and spacecraft company that Elon Musk founded in 2002.
