Toyota announces five-seater sedan with hydrogen engine

June 2023

Japanese auto maker Toyota have recently announced the launch of a new hydrogen fuel cell car (FCEV) in the third quarter of 2023.

Toyota is taking a different approach to achieving carbon neutrality in its automotive vehicles. It will be available to buy in Japan only from autumn 2023 and will signal the company's return to the hydrogen car market after over a decade of absence.

The only FCEV cars currently available on the market is the Hyundai Nexo and Toyota’s own Mirai. Around 56,000 FCEV’s have been sold globally to date, where as, 10.5 million BEV’s and plug-in hybrid EV’s were delivered in 2022 alone.

Can Toyota’s hydrogen combustion engine make EV’s obsolete

The use of internal combustion engines has been the main source for transportation for a long time, but as new hydrogen technology becomes more usable, it becomes clearer that there are more efficient and environmentally friendly ways to get the power needed to move our vehicles.

The Toyota Corolla Cross H2 Concept is based on a new prototype hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine. This power comes from the hot 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder used in the car, which has been converted to use Hydrogen as a fuel. Thick, armoured fuel tanks are required for holding the highly flammable hydrogen technology. The engine gets hardened valves and valve seats, stronger connecting rods, and fuel injectors designed for gas, not liquid.

A Large Hydrogen Powered V-8 Is In The Works

Toyota has partnered with Yamaha Motors to develop a hydrogen-fuelled V-8 engine. In an announcement earlier this year, Yamaha said the 5.0-liter V-8 would be based on the one used by the Lexus RC Coupe, with modifications to its cylinder heads and fuel injectors, among other things.

The engine will produce 455 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 398 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 rpm. That's a bit less power than the original gasoline V-8 that it's based on, but still quite respectable. But the most stunning feature of the hydrogen V-8 has to be the eight-into-one top-mounted exhaust manifold, which Yamaha claims creates a distinct high-frequency sound.

We highly recommend investors with an interest in projects like Neom to speak to one of our advisers today.
